
What makes the moment even more tragic is that Gon doesn't even use the transformation to take out the Chimera Ant arc's main villain. When Gon does it though, readers don't feel excited, they feel dread at seeing such a happy-go-lucky character-driven into such a dark place. Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach all use transformations in a similar way. When Goku goes Super Saiyan against Freiza, it reinforces why Goku is so special and why he's the only one who can defeat the big villain he's facing. In manga, transformations are supposed to be empowering events that make readers feel exhilarated. What makes the moment so impactful is just how much it goes against everything that readers expect. Gon does revert back to normal, but the physical toll of his transformation puts him on death's door. Killua can only watch on in horror as Gon uses this power to crush Pitou's head then pulverize the ant's corpse. In this new form, he doesn't just defeat Pitou, he obliterates the villain.

Using all of the power in his body, Gon ages himself by decades, reaching his maximum potential. At first, Gon feels immeasurable sadness, but as Pitou goes in to kill the grieving boy, that sadness turns to rage. When they finally arrive, Pitou reveals the heartbreaking truth Kite isn't just mindless, he's dead. The duo catches Pitou in a moment of vulnerability and force him to accompany Gon back to Kite's body. During a raid on the Chimera Ant King, Gon and Killua waste no time in going after Pitou. Gon makes it his mission to find Pitou and force the Chimera Ant to fix Kite.
